Enrollment directly in a foreign university

Every year, many French students choose to study at a university in United States, Canada or Asia. It’s up to you to choose the destination that best meets your expectations and your budget.

A successful expatriation requires a long preparation. It is important to choose the right course of study and the right establishment. Ask yourself the right questions: Do you have a good command of the country’s language to take the courses? Will your diplomas be recognized in France? Are there partnerships with French universities? When do registrations take place and how are files selected? QWhat is the cost of living there? All this can help you choose the right establishment.

exchange programs

You are already a student in France and planning a semester abroad. For this, the Erasmus program is essential. This is an exchange program with around thirty European countries. Since 2016, 168 countries outside Europe have also been accessible, i.e. 202 participating countries. Spain, Germany and the United Kingdom are the preferred destinations for the 85,000 French young people who benefited from the program in 2018. Erasmus allows students to stay and study for at least six months.

Who can benefit? This program is aimed at all European students enrolled in an establishment that issues a diploma recognized by the State, and on condition that they have completed a first year of studies. Does this formula appeal to you? Approach your school as soon as possible (in January for a September departure).

For those considering an American experience, the Fulbright program supports around one hundred study and research projects by French students, researchers and doctoral candidates who wish to go to the United States. Since its creation in 1946, more than 12,000 French people have benefited.

Want something new? Check with your school. Many establishments offer exchange programs with partner establishments in Asia, Africa or the United States, or have branches abroad.

Attend a summer school

Most American universities offer this type of formula during the summer. The principle: live on an American campus and take courses (ideally in your field of study) while discovering the country. Count the same 3,000-4,000 euros for a month of classes, to which the price of air tickets should be added. More and more European universities set up summer schools. The Summer Schools in Europe website lists no less than 850 schools offering programs from one to several weeks, mainly in Europe, with a cost ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand euros.

The classic language permanence formula

If your only desire is to progress in a language while visiting a large metropolis, language stays organized by private French schools or directly on site remain. Beware, the offer is plethoric, and the quality is not always there!

Therefore, find out about the proposed formula (number of hours, methods, profile of teachers, number of students in classes…), and the seriousness of the school (date of creation, number of students accepted, facilities, reputation to be verified on social media and with alumni, etc.). Word of mouth and recommendation are the best ways to not make mistakes.

PVT: for work, study and travel

Have you thought about PVT? The Working Holiday Program (PVT) allows young people aged 18 to 35 to stay for one year (2 years in some cases) in one of the 14 signatory countries of this agreement. Note that last July, Australia extended the age limit to 35, like Canada!

The advantage of this formula is that it allows you to study part-time. Each country has its specificities: In Canada (about 6 months), in Australia (about 4 months), as well as in New Zealand (less than 6 months). In some countries like Canada, you can take courses, but you cannot study at university or obtain an undergraduate degree with this visa.
