How you can research exterior Europe?

Erasmus+ has democratized and simplified studying abroad. Procedures, advice and specifics, here are some keys to calmly prepare for your international mobility.

To study abroad, outside Europe, you can first register yourself at a foreign institution. But in this case it will be necessary pay tuitionoften much higher than in France.

Choose exchange programs

Be aware, however, that the French benefit from advantageous conditions at several Canadian universities, particularly in Quebec. In the French-speaking province, “the year of study can go back to 9,000 Canadian dollarsthe equivalent of a private school in France”, emphasizes Fanny Michaud, from Study experience, a mobility support company.

At other universities, such as Ottawa, you will pay the same price as a Canadian, as long as you take three quarters of your French courses.

But the easiest way is to go through a exchange program or bilateral agreement between French and foreign establishments. In a mobility of this type, called supervised, you will pay the French tuition and will be guided throughout the process : definition of the educational project, constitution of the file, visa procedures, etc.

“There is one international relations department or a reference teacher at each school and university. We should not hesitate to approach them”, recommends Valérie Montembault, international mission manager at the CIDJ (Youth Information and Documentation Center).

Anticipate your departure abroad

Rest assured, going to study outside Europe is no longer complicated, especially if your mobility is supervised. There are just a few details to note. Because anyway, it will be necessary think about your project well in advance. “The application is submitted one year before departure, but you have to start thinking about it two years in advance. You have to know which country and which university do we want to go tofor what contribution in your career”, advises Camille Masse, from the department of international mobility at the University of Lille (59).

You will also need to establish a study contract. “You have to look at the content of the courses, choose them and check with a pedagogical coordinator if it fits. All this takes time, especially outside Erasmus+ where there is no not the same ECTS credit system“, continues Camille Masse.

Also be sure to inform yourself about required language level : You may have to provide a language certification. “Improving your English is often the first motivation, but to join a study program you must already have a good level“, warns Valérie Montembault.

plan a budget

Another point to consider: budget. Mobility outside Europe often costs more expensive than an Erasmusbetween the plane ticket, visa costs and language certification… Also be aware that certain countries such as the United States or Australia require, to enter the territory, a sufficient level of resources.

There are different aids: international mobility assistance (based on social criteria), grants from local authorities, scholarships awarded by the university, host country or through programs such as Fulbright, for the United States.

During supervised mobility, your period of study abroad will be recognized without problems. If you go alone, you will have to be more vigilant. You can approach the Enic-Naric center, which emits diploma comparability certificates. But “with an American or Australian bachelor’s degree, you can do a master’s degree in France and vice versa,” says Fanny Michaud.
