If you are planning to travel around Europe, you will likely need your health pass, whether for tourist or student mobility.
Already in force in France since last summer, the health pass is now essential for traveling in Europe. With the gradual reopening of borders on June 9, 2021, the terms of stay abroad became clearer. The 1st of July, the European health pass therefore seemed to promote travel within the European space. Here’s what you need to know.
Tests or vaccinations as proof of travel
As of July 1, 2021, the PCR test is no longer the only condition for entering the soil of a European country. From now on, the health pass, or certificate, can be requested when traveling in Europe. contains proof of your vaccination, a PCR or antigen test performed within a maximum of 72 hours or a recovery from Covid-19 of less than six months (be careful, this last argument is not accepted in all countries). Only self-tests are not part of the health pass.
As for vaccines, four are recognized by the European Medicines Agency: Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson. Vaccination is considered “complete” two weeks* after the second injection (or four weeks after the single injection for Johnson & Johnson).
Please note that some countries may add additional instructions depending on the evolution of the health crisis and the variants. Other countries also make distinctions depending on whether you arrive by car, train or plane. So remember to check the terms and conditions before your departure on the France Diplomatie website.
A health pass valid only in the European area
This health pass is both valid in France and throughout the european space. This includes the 27 countries of the European Union, plus Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland, the Vatican and, as of November 2021, the United Kingdom.
You can get your Health Insurance Vaccination Certificate. The document “EU Covid Digital Certificate” contains a QR code with all the information about the status of your vaccination (vaccine administered, number of doses, date and country of vaccination). It can be translated into English on the TousAntiCovid app, where you can also download your pass directly. If that doesn’t work, a screenshot of the QR code can be shown to the authorities. All persons over the age of 12 must present this health pass to travel.
Outside Europe, however, the European certificate is not valid. Once again, each country dictates its own terms of entry into its territory.
