QS Rating 2023: a French college within the high 30

The rankings follow each other and are not always the same. The 2023 edition of the QS World University Ranking, published on 8 June, distinguishes 32 French higher education institutions among the 1422 ranked, as in 2022, but with some new features. Thus, PSL (Paris Sciences et Lettres), now 8th European university (10th in 2022), and now 26th in the world, when it was “only” 44th in 2022 – thanks to these 18 places conquered, it thus passes the top 50 in the top 30. The result was expected, as the university, recognized as such in 2019, is the result of the merger of 10 prestigious establishments, including Dauphine, Mines Paris Tech, ENS.

France is 7th in the world in number of universities/schools ranked

In the top 3 of the French-French ranking, PSL is ahead of the Institut Polytechnique de Paris, 48th (+1 place) and the Sorbonne University, 60th (+12), the latter two benefit, like PSL, as they result from of the merger of several already well-regarded establishments. More generally, France confirms its good place in Europe, as it has the largest number of universities in the Top 100 of continental Europe, in particular thanks to its international research, very collaborative, and maintains its position of 7th in the ranking by country . , behind the United States, Great Britain, China, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong and Japan, South Korea, Switzerland and Singapore. Not bad if we consider the average budget allocated to French universities as a percentage of GDP, which has been falling since 2012, and lower than that of the leading countries (with the exception of Japan), which is mostly public (OECD, 2021).

Unsurprisingly, the best universities according to QS are the American and British ones, which monopolize the top 10 – although Switzerland stands out with ETH Zurich, 9th. No turnaround in this ranking, with the exception of Oxford, which goes from 2nd place in the 2022 rankings to 4th in the 2023 crop.
