European students will have to apply for a visa after Brexit, in the same way as young people from other destinations outside Europe, by gathering a certain number of supporting documents.

Let’s study the new rules! European Union students wishing to come and study in the UK from 1 January 2021 will have to follow a new procedure. Young people interested in mobility across the Channel for the next semester or the next university year can already know this new and more demanding system.

Prepare six months in advance and pay a fee

In general, Europeans will be treated in the same way as Americans, Indians or Canadians who wish to study in England. The student visa application must be made on the government website and requires verification of eligibility and preparation of a series of administrative documents.

Students must apply six months in advance and pay a fee of £348. Supplementary health insurance for access to British NHS medical care will also need to be taken out, resulting in additional costs. The answer will be obtained in approximately three weeks.

70 points to accumulate to be eligible

The student visa application system is reserved for young people over the age of 16 and is based on a points system. To be eligible, the student must reach a total of 70 points upon proof and presentation of several documents. 10 points are awarded for English proficiency and another 10 for the ability to support yourself financially or being able to rely on a guarantor for support.

50 points can be accumulated by gathering: proof of acceptance to the desired student course, a Confirmation of acceptance for study (CAS) which is the document provided by universities within the scope of visa applications, participation in a course leading to qualification, with the necessary university level to benefit from this course, as well as the various requirements on the place where it will be provided.

A second visa to apply once graduated

Other documents must be provided, such as a passport or tuberculosis test. Parental consent is also required for minors. This system is only valid for students applying for a first visa in the UK. Persons wishing to extend or change their visa must comply with another similar procedure but with different deadlines.

Going forward, students trained in the UK will be able to apply for another visa allowing them to work or seek work in the UK for two years. Applications will be open from the summer of 2021. So let’s go on an adventure!
